Man United's 4-3 defeat to FC Copenhagen on Wednesday night has left more than just this season's Champions League campaign in jeopardy.
With just two group games to go, Manchester United face an uphill struggle to progress to the last-16 of this season's Champions League.
If they finish third in the group they will be relegated to the Europa League, entering the play-off round, whereas a fourth-placed finish in Group A would mark the end of their participation in Europe this season altogether. It means their upcoming clashes with Galatasaray and Bayern are vital. Ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports in May, said: "All the big players want to play in the Champions League. Manchester United is a big club.
"We fight for every position, and, on the pitch, we fight for every yard, every duel because that is the meaning of top football." Therefore, United could, if they miss out on the top four, secure Champions League qualification by finishing fifth. The Reds are currently eighth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal and four points behind Aston Villa in fifth.
