Michael Avery was caught tragedy chanting after he made vile gestures referencing the Hillsborough and Heysel stadium disasters
A Manchester United fan told a court he felt 'deeply ashamed' after he was caught 'tragedy chanting' and making vile gestures mocking Liverpool supporters.
Asked about the affects his behaviour had on others, he went on: "Everyone who knows me feels it as a well. It's a difficult situation. I wish it never would have happened. I regret it terribly... I hope other people look at what happened to me and they think twice before they do anything at football matches."
Prosecutor Tess Kenyon said the case 'involved tragedy chanting' at United's match against Liverpool on March 18 which 'referenced' the Hillsborough and Heysel stadium tragedies. Some 97 Liverpool fans died at the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and 39 died at the Heysel disaster in 1985. The court heard excerpts of a statement made by GMP football intelligence officer PC Ford, who said football 'stirs and provokes emotions' but that it was 'fundamental' that match-going supporters they should feel safe. He cited a 'significant rise' in disorder at football matches in the last two seasons.
