Cristiano Ronaldo's shocking Manchester United exit in 2022 left a sour taste in many mouths, including the star’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who now seems happy to send his clients to Old Trafford once again
Manchester United have already signed Leny Yoro and look set to announce Manuel Ugarte after repairing their relationship with the players' agent, Jorge Mendes. The Portuguese go-between represented Cristiano Ronaldo up until his bitter Old Trafford departure in 2022 and burned bridges with the Manchester club after his client's fiery tell-all interview with Piers Morgan.
United have already completed a £52m deal this summer for another of his clients, Yoro, indicating that the once flammable relationship between both parties has been somewhat repaired. The imminent £42m arrival of PSG's Uruguayan ace Ugarte all but confirms that the Ronaldo saga is water under the bridge. Ugarte is due to become the club's fifth summer signing after the arrivals of Yoro, Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, and Bayern Munich pair Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. Erik ten Hag has been coy about Ugarte's arrival, stating when questioned: "I don't have any update on anything regarding transfers. We always look for better. When we have news, we will report it, and at this moment, I have not heard anything, so I don't think there is anything to tell." However, the Daily Mail report that the long-winded Ugarte move was finalised after United's hierarchy took a trip to the French capital to negotiate a deal. Ten Hag's side first pursued the enforcer in June, when it became clear that current holding midfield number one Casemiro didn't exactly have the legs necessary to man such a role in the Premier League. The main trigger point that needed to be passed was agreeing on a fee. Les Parisiens paid Sporting CP £51.1m for Ugarte last summer and wanted to recoup that fee entirely. United were unwilling to do this and held the majority of the cards cards with Ugarte being frozen out of Luis Enrique's squad entirely - and his replacement, Joao Neves, already signed. A £42m deal has now reportedly been agreed upon, and Ugarte will imminently arrive at Old Trafford following a medical. This move and Yoro's £52m switch from Lille are both solid indicators that Mendes and United have reached a truce. Mendes and Ronaldo parted ways in the wake of the great forward's Old Trafford exit, as it was said a rift appeared after a move to a Champions League club wasn't secured. There is no love lost between the two, however, as Mendes revealed on the back of the pair's professional split: "He is a special player and a special person for me. "If I, a few years ago, thought that I could have a player with half the value of Cristiano, I would sign for less! And all of us Portuguese should be proud to have had and still have a player like him. I've always said it and I'll say it all my life: he was and is the best player in the entire history of world football! I don't have the slightest doubt, even compared to others."
