His former club submitted an opening offer of £35m, plus around £8m in add-ons, when the summer transfer window opened on Friday.

Everton are one of several clubs whose efforts to comply with spending regulations would be improved by a sale before the accounting deadline at the end of the month.
But the offer for Branthwaite was felt to be derisory, with Everton seeking far more for the 21-year-old, who is now a senior England international after an extraordinary breakthrough season in the Premier League. For his part, Cole believes Everton owe Manchester United no favours. Asked whether he thought the club was correct to set a reported £70m valuation on the starlet, he told Betfred: “100%. He’s 21 years old, Manchester United have offered £35 million plus add-ons, so why would Everton try and do them a favour and say that it’s a fantastic deal for them, especially when you consider the problems they have.
