Man who died after motorway fall 'didn't know how to cope' after partner's death, inquest hears

A Tameside man who died after falling from a motorway bridge was struggling following the death of his partner, an inquest has heard.

"The two or three months space between the two deaths shows he was clearly bereaved and clearly heartbroken and couldn't see a life without Philip," Mr Whittingham said. The court heard how Gary had mentioned suicidal ideation 'once or twice' to Stephanie during this period, but that her and Mr Whittingham 'thought he had turned a corner' and was 'doing better' in the run up to his death.

Asking about the weeks and days prior to the tragic incident, senior coroner Mutch questioned if there was 'anything different' about December 18. Mr Whittingham said that 'nothing stands out', but pointed out that December is often a 'challenging' period for people on their own. He also said that himself and Stephanie had been unable to visit Gary as they were isolating after catching Covid.

Mr Idle said Gary 'expressed no suicidal thoughts' during the visit, and that he would have been taken to hospital for mental health support if he had.
