Senior executives at Galway-based medical device firm MMT claim they only learned about Bryan Mathias's plans after he had sold his belongings and bought a house on the Mediterranean island

A business development manager who was sacked after selling his home and relocating to Cyprus without receiving formal approval from his employer has taken a case for unfair dismissal.

They claimed that Mr Mathias’s intention to permanently relocate to the Mediterranean island only emerged during a visit to Galway by Crew Feighery, who was then MMT’s vice president for catheter technology. “Yeah, you knew that,” Mr Mathias said, according to Mr Feighery, to which he replied that he was completely unaware.

They said it was therefore integral that the firm’s business development manager was based in Ireland, and more specifically Galway, in order to be available to its customers. In June 2023, MMT Vice President of Sales Omar Hall told Mr Mathias that news of his proposed relocation had received “a lot of attention at corporate level”, and asked him for a written plan of how he envisaged it working.

The company’s representative said Mr Mathias was ultimately told that, unless he gave an undertaking that he would continue to be located in Ireland, the firm would have no option but to dismiss him.
