It officially opened in 1967

It's been more than half a century since one of Manchester's best known roads and busiest commuter routes launched.

The Mancunian Way was the first two-mile elevated motorway to be built outside London and was officially opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson on May 5, 1967. So innovative in design and construction, in the 1960s a 30-minute documentary by the Cement and Concrete Association was produced and over the years it has also featured in films and songs.Seen several times in the film 24 Hour Party People, it also appeared in the scene of the time machine in TV cop show Life On Mars and was immortalised in the Take That song ‘Mancunian Way’ on their 2006 album Beautiful World.

These images, from our archives Mirrorpix, have been recently rediscovered and capture what the Mancunian Way looked like in its first year - 1967.
