By Mark EisenhauerIt’s been nearly a decade since one of college football’s biggest scandals rocked the sports world.star linebacker Manti Te’o was the face of the Irish’s resurgence in 2012, named Heisman runner-up as he helped the program to an undefeated regular season and national title game appearance. Fueling him were the early-season deaths of his grandmother and purported girlfriend Lennay Kekua.
A South Bend Tribune report had said Te’o and Kekua met in person in the fall of 2009 after the Irish’s 45-38 loss at Stanford, where Kekua was allegedly a student.“That goes back to what I did with my dad,” Te’o said. “I knew thatpeople find out that this girl who died, I was so invested in, I didn’t meet her, as well. So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away so that people wouldn’t think that I was some crazy dude.
According to the Deadspin report, Tuiasosopo was at least an acquaintance of Te’o, with evidence of the two communicating on social media. In May 2012, Te’o retweeted Tuiasosopo and wished her a happy birthday that June. One woman interviewed for the article said they were “at least family friends.”
