Reading, writing and maths skills are improving in Merseyside, but almost half of kids in some areas are still failing to meet standards.

Nine years ago, fewer than half of 11-year-olds in three of our region’s councils failed to meet the expected standards for reading, writing and maths. In Liverpool just 46% of children met each of the three Key Stage 2 standards in the 2015/16 academic year. In Knowsley only 48% met the standards, and in Wirral it was 49%. Fast forward to 2023/24 and all councils in our region have passed the 50% mark, but all but one are below the national average.

However, pupils are struggling in some parts of the country much more than in ours. Only 51% of children in Portsmouth and the Isle of White met each of the reading, writing and maths standards in their Key Stage 2 results. That means 49% fell short. In Central Bedfordshire and Norfolk, meanwhile, only 52% of 11-year-olds met the standards. In Blackpool and Cumberland it was 53%, and in Wirral, Manchester and Oldham it was 54%.
