Maren Morris collaborated with artist Danielle Noel to create a set of tarot cards, one for each song on her new album 'Humble Quest':
traveled to Hawaii last year to record in downright idyllic circumstances—not necessarily the place you think of when you hear the word “humble.” But in deciding to name her new album, she said was acknowledging that humility can be a complicated word, especially for a woman in the public eye.
That’s why I was really fascinated by the Spotify tarot cards and the really simple actions on them. By turning them into a quest, you’re saying that humility isn’t just a thing you say, it’s a thing that you have to keep on proving. Do you have a favorite one? I mean, it’s really sentimental for me now because I met so many of my close friends that I have to this day, through those early days of cowriting. One of which being my husband! So I met Ryan nine years ago, and we’ve been married for three, together for almost six, and we have a son. So just on a personal relationship level, Nashville gave me that—and I found my voice here, and the woman and artist I am today.
I wrote it the day that I found out I was pregnant. So I had just taken a pregnancy test that morning and it was positive and I had a [songwriting session] booked with the Love Junkies. I didn’t want to cancel on them because they’re all three really busy and my heroes. And so I told Ryan, my husband, that, “Hey, we’re having a baby.” And I was like, “Let’s celebrate later, I have to go to this write.”—they’re all badass songwriters but they’re also all mothers.
I still get really emotional when I hear the final version of it back. So I guess, yeah, it definitely resonates with me and probably always will. Even though I wrote it before I met my son, I feel like that's such a resounding theme going forward as a parent, is that you are going to protect them but you have to let them go some day and let them fly free. So he's not going to be mine forever but, yeah, I think that it’s definitely still a true concept.
