The National Endowment for the Arts chair hopes to learn firsthand about the opportunities and challenges facing the Chicago arts community when she visits the city for the first time in her official capacity.

I clearly see how the arts have intrinsic value and are also deeply intertwined with health and wellness, comprehensive community and economic development, education, the environment, and other community and societal concerns. As the nation works to recover from the effects of the pandemic and as we address long-standing inequities, the contributions of the arts and cultural sectors are vital.

When people discuss the importance of the arts, a significant consideration is economic impact. Recent data released by the NEA and the Bureau of Economic Analysis looked at the value of arts and cultural industries to the gross domestic product. At a national level, arts and culture added $876.7 billion, or 4.2%, to the U.S. GDP in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. In Illinois alone, the arts added $26.6 billion to the state’s economy.
