Black residents represent about 2.4% of the county’s population, but Black drivers comprised 18% of stops in the sheriff department’s jurisdiction, according to new data.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office has launched an online dashboard aimed at complying with state law in reporting race-based traffic stops — and the data are raising concerns about racial disparities.

Schneider said “without knowing who the local researchers are or what methods they used to analyze the information, we are not prepared to comment on their findings.” Pedestrian and vehicle stops recorded in California cities and counties were down in 2020, according to a report released in December by the California Department of Justice.

”Every step is an additional layer of risk and fear of harm that individuals of color experience, based on what they see on the news every day,” she said of traffic stops and searches. Sklansky said that if law enforcement agencies disagree with comparing policing data to population demographics, then they should report the totals and racial breakdown of people they stopped who were from other counties.
