Taoiseach Micheál Martin faced accusations of misleading the public during the election campaign after repeatedly stating that 40,000 houses would be built last year. While Martin denied intentionally misleading voters, he admitted the government missed its housing target. A new report found Ireland needs to double its housing targets to meet demand.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has been accused of misleading the public during the election by repeatedly stating that 40,000 houses would be built last year.

It was also below the 40,000 figure that Mr Martin and Fianna Fáil, as well as Tánaiste Simon Harris and Fine Gael, continued to state would be delivered during the election. In October, the Dáil heard that just 21,000 homes had been completed. “But here's the catch, Taoiseach, none of it was true. The figure of 40,000 new homes was pure fiction, a trick designed to mislead the public because you couldn't face an election based on the actual facts of your performance in housing.”

“There was no attempt to mislead anybody in relation to that. These were external groups making estimates in relation to the prospects for a high figure in 2024.” Mr Martin said he was “extremely disappointed” that the Government did not hit its targets but argued that they had in previous years.
