Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega play a teacher and student in tense drama Miller's Girl - which went viral earlier this year as cinema fans were startled by a sex scene between the pair

Martin Freeman has broken his silence over a vicious backlash over his film Miller’s Girl which included an uncomfortable sex scene with much younger co-star Jenna Ortega.

During the course of the film, the characters are shown in an intensive sex scene which left many cinema fans uncomfortable with viewers taking to social media to slam the provocative scenes as “troubling” and “gross”. Now Martin has reacted to the furore in a new interview where he has defended the film.

Film fans were unsettled by Martin and Jenna’s sex scenes due to the fact there is a 31 year age gap between the two performers. Footage from the scene went viral on social media - provoking a tilde wave of outrage. One fan commented online as the film was released back in February: “Man what!!! I get she’s an actor but man it’s hard to watch.” Another remarked: “IS THAT HER TEACHER???” While a further fan commented: “I think I am finally done watching these age gap movies.

“I mean she scared the s**t out of me. She definitely went to places with Cairo that… it’s even tricky to explain. Cairo thinks she is such an adult, but she’s not. She’s an isolated young woman who is a ghost in her house. Her entire education about romance is from 18th and 19th-century literature and old movies, which are inherently problematic. But she thinks she is such a grownup.”
