An Audience with the King and his Queen: Martin King and Jenny McCarthy on the joy of being grandparents, cutting negativity out of their lives, and their exciting new ventures in the July issue of RSVP Magazine
Ireland AM star Martin King and celebrity photographer Jenny McCarthy bounce into Tankardstown House and Jenny proclaims that they have big news to reveal to us. After a flat tyre and M50 traffic, the pair – who can only be described as a power couple given their many successful and high-profile roles – are full of chats and are excited for our exclusive photoshoot.
Jenny: Martin is not great with change and leaving The Six O’Clock Show for Ireland AM was a big change. But there was a huge hole on the show to fill and anyone who watches the show would have agreed with that. Martin is perfect for it.M: I still keep a watchful eye on it, and I do watch it as often as I can just to see who the guests are. The thing about The Six O’Clock Show is that it always gets great guests because of the connection with the record companies and the movie companies.
J: It will be nice to chat about things that happen every day, things that happen every day for everybody.J: He’s a control freak when it comes to packing the dishwasher. I think I’ve done a great job and he’ll go and refill it after me. It’s so annoying! J: I don’t want to see him losing his job either, he’s amazing at his job. I’ve been interviewed by him before on 2FM and we know him through the industry.
M: RTÉ is a public service broadcaster, but I don’t think it needed to be revealed now. It normally happens two years down the line. I’m sure he’s sitting there somewhere going, “What the hell is going on? I don’t know anything about this.” J: We don’t invite the crap into our lives anymore because it’s a waste of time. We don’t surround ourselves with negativity. We’re not holier than thou, but life is too short not to have fun. You might have people who have been in your life until now and you stop and think, “If they came along now, I wouldn’t invite them into my life.” Then there are new people in your life and you have so much in common with them and you become great friends.
Your son Dean got married in June 2022 and now James is next. There must be lots of excitement in the family!
