The money saving expert has warned that 'almost all' pensioners will have to find hundreds of pounds more to pay their bills this winter
Martin Lewis has called on the Government to rethink its changes to the eligibility criteria for the Winter Fuel Payment, in light of the impending rise in energy bills come October. Ofgem has announced that average energy bills will go up 10 percent from October, with tariffs for gas and electric rising by £149 annually, pushing the total up to £1,717 per year.
He clarified: 'While energy will cost less than during last winter's crisis time, the reduction in rates only equates to a drop of roughly £100 over the six winter months for a household with typical usage. Yet specific pensioner energy support has dropped by far more...Last year pensioner homes got up to £300 extra per household cost of living support - that's gone, and its loss alone is far bigger than the saving made by slightly lower rates.
