Fianna Fáil TDs have already started speculating how many extra ministries their 10 seats over Fine Gael should secure if they go back into coalition

The number of seats won by Fianna Fáil should be "reflected" in the "structure of government", Tánaiste Micheál Martin has said.

Speaking after the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting in Leinster House on Wednesday, Mr Martin said that "serious work is ahead of us" and he will begin negotiations with others to "form a government that will last the full term". Meanwhile, Mr Harris said he is "very open" to his party attempting to form a government with Independent TDs and other parties, except Sinn Féin.

She added: "It might be that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil very speedily establish their government. It might be that they stumble." Returning politicians, particularly in Fianna Fáil, were busy speculating on the formation of the next government.
