When Liverpool completed their £150m midfield overhaul, supporters were left having to ignore a little voice in their head that one position had been left unfilled. While Wataru Endo would belatedly enjoy an impressive maiden season at Anfield , he was still just a left-field stop-gap, plastering over the lack of an elite specialist. The Reds hadn’t expected to be thrown in the deep end in such a market on the eve of the new season.
And he has previously admitted he was well-aware that such an opportunity would not have arisen if the Reds had not been scrambling around for a solution after numerous transfer disappointments. Fortunately his arrival paid off, with the 31-year-old proving himself to be one of Liverpool's best players in Klopp’s final season in charge. But it was always clear that Endo would not be a long-term solution.
