The father-of-two spoke about how the public treated him during the controversy and what is coming down the line in his career and personal life
Marty Whelan describes having felt "powerless" during last year's RTÉ payments controversy as several colleagues reported receiving abuse in public, but he is certain of his relationship with the broadcaster going forward.
Marty said: "I’m pretty good at enjoying life. I get up at 4.30am every morning to present my radio show. I do that five days a week. I’m doing that, but I need to make sure I’ve energy at the end of the day to do other things, which I do. You have to have a regime. Marty addressed recent speculation that Lyric FM could be sold to help balance the books at RTÉ. He said "I don’t believe so. There was a fear at the time, there was talk of selling it and selling the RTÉ Guide.
"Of course. It’s very difficult to come in and do your job every day with all that carry-on happening. You have to come in and just do what you do. With all of that, firstly, you’re powerless and secondly, all of it is over your head. Thirdly, you don’t know about any of the stuff going on. "That story doesn’t sell papers, and I get that. I’ve had wonderful colleagues over the years and I still admire them. You rise above all that other stuff, if you can. And, as I said, it didn’t involve me or those I’m close to. That was a nice feeling."
