Thunderstrike is one of the most tragic versions of Thor, and after 30 years, it seems that Marvel still won’t give Eric Masterson the respect he always deserved.
The God of Thunder, Thor, is one of Marvel's most iconic characters. The original Thor is the son of Odin, prince of Asgard and protector of both the Golden City and of Earth. Over the years, however, the title of Thor has been bestowed on others. One of them, Eric Masterson , has a tragic and unfortunate story, that ended in the worst possible way.
Eric Masterson was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz and first appeared in 1988's Thor #391. He was a New York architect who happened to be working at the same construction site where Thor, under the guise of Sigurd Jarlson, took employment, at a time when the God of Thunder wanted to maintain a secret identity. This chance encounter would change Masterson's life forever, and not for the best.
When Thor returned and took Mjolnir back, Odin gave Eric a new weapon, an enchanted mace that gave him powers similar to Thor's. Taking the moniker of Thunderstrike, Masterson continued with his life as a superhero, spurred by a sense of duty. However, he ended up losing his life to stop the evil god Seth and destroying the cursed weapon Bloodaxe. After Eric's death, Kevin grew up as a troubled child, never understanding why his father would give his life for others and leave him alone.
It is a little disappointing to see Marvel dig up Thunderstrike just to be a decaying zombie. Tom DeFalco created him to give Thor a more relatable,"human" personality , and the character was not badly received by fans. DeFalco even claims that the Thunderstrike series outsold both The Mighty Thor and The Avengers at the time of cancellation, though some doubt that.
