Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald was being interviewed by Philip Boucher Hayes on RTÉ Radio 1 about her party's new immigration document.
Mary Lou McDonald and radio presenter Philip Boucher Hayes had a tense exchange live on air as the Sinn Féin leader accused him of being “rude” and not being “inquisitive” enough.
As Ms McDonald tried to again refute suggestions that there is consultation with communities on asylum, the host said “We’ve already heard you on that. Let’s get to the question”. She then accused him of “misquoting” the policy document. Ms McDonald later said that the cost of reallocating civil servants was “not enormous”.
“Be that as it may. The government may claim that this is their approach. It is something that they have failed to do. This was signposted five years ago by Catherine Day and they still haven't done it. I'm less interested and I would have thought as a journalist and a broadcaster you would be far more inquisitive, not simply around what the government is saying, which you're very happy to repeat ad nauseam, than actually what the government is doing or in this case has failed to do.
