In an exclusive interview with the Irish Mirror, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald also hinted who she would like to see in power following the US Presidential election

Sinn Féin would defer the carbon tax increase, introduce a range of “one-off payments” and give households energy credits worth €450 in its budget.

“There's obviously an issue around healthcare, access to healthcare, the health budget. I'm going to lay a bet this is going to be the usual round the houses. The government last time underfunded it with their eyes wide open. There's going to be supports for workers. We will also have small business in our in our line of sight as well, because we know the cost of living crisis has hit them hard.

Ms McDonald also said the next President of the United States must “shift” the country’s policy on Israel and be on the “right side of history”. While she did not explicitly state who she is backing in November’s election, she told the Irish Mirror that she supports “progressive” politics, indicating she was backing Kamala Harris.

“I think you know that answer to that,” she laughed. “Ultimately, the Americans need to make their call. But I am for, clearly, politics that's progressive, that's about equality, that's about respecting people, respecting all of us. The bigger issue for whoever is in the White House – that's beyond our reach, they go and decide that of the ballot box – but the relationship with the United States and Ireland is a really important one. It's a really consequential one.
