The former Irish President, alongside a range of humanitarian organisations, called on the Irish Government to use its power at the United Nations (UN) to convince world leaders to introduce an arms ban in the African region.

Mary Robinson has stated that the world is “indifferent” to the “appalling” crisis in Sudan , which Leo Varadkar described on Monday as “the most serious humanitarian crisis happening at the moment”.

Siobhan Walsh, CEO of Goal, told an emergency briefing organised by Dóchas on Monday that the lives of “over 25 million people are hanging in the balance”. Mrs Robinson, Chair of the Elders, said that “what is happening in Sudan is appalling”. "The death toll as a whole, particularly amongst children, could be as high as 150,000. Women are being raped by both sides as a weapon of war.”

“The scale of it is enormous, in terms of 150,000 people dead, two million displaced outside of Sudan and even larger numbers internally displaced,” he said. “This clearly is the most serious humanitarian crisis happening in the world at the moment and potentially the biggest geopolitical crisis because it could destabilise very fragile states that surround Sudan.”
