The public have been urged to take measures such as wearing masks on public transport as Covid and flu levels create a potential 'respiratory virus storm'
The majority of patients who were hospitalised with flu were over 65 or children, she said. There has been a 65 per cent increase in hospitalisations among those aged five to 14 years.
If someone is experiencing symptoms, particularly if they are in a vulnerable category, they should be medically assessed to see if they are eligible for viral treatment, even if they are fully vaccinated, she said. “It’s important that we use all the tools in the toolbox.” The HSE’s chief clinical officer, Dr Colm Henry, also appealed to the public to wear masks on public transport, in congregated settings and when in contact with vulnerable people.
