A masked man wielding a knife fatally stabbed another man on a busy Dublin street in a horrifying incident captured on camera. A second man sustained serious injuries. Gardaí launched a murder investigation and are appealing for witnesses.
A masked man brandishing a knife was caught on camera in a horrifying incident that led to the fatal stabbing of another man on a busy Dublin street. Images from the scene show a group of men scuffling shortly before the victim was killed on South Anne Street, near Grafton Street, around 3 a.m. this morning. Gardai have launched a murder investigation following the death, while another man sustained serious injuries in the incident.
Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene and found the man with serious injuries and unresponsive. He received treatment at the scene from emergency personnel and was transported to St. James' Hospital. Sadly, he died from his injuries. Another man, also in his 30s, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, believed to be from knife wounds, and is now recovering. The scene was cordoned off today to allow the Garda Technical Bureau to examine the area. Bloodstains could still be seen on the path where the incident occurred, a bustling nightlife spot. Approximately 12 businesses on the street, including Kehoe's Pub, Xian Street Food, Gotham Café, and Bunsen, were forced to remain closed due to the fatal assault. Affected business owners say there needs to be a greater Garda presence in the capital. Sean Phillips of Kehoe's Pub told RTÉ News: 'There's 10 or 12 businesses closed today and Saturday is one of our busiest days. You just see the blood on the street. That's horrendous of a Saturday morning. There has to be more guards on the beat in and around the city centre.” Ash Thulseepersad, senior manager at The Gotham Café, reported that CCTV footage showed about 150 people in the area overnight. He stated that he believed South Anne Street was a generally safe area. However, he added that “drugs and booze going around last night” so “something was bound to happen”. Labour MEP Aodhán Ó Ríordáin commented that the fatal stabbing of a man in Dublin city center was a devastating reminder of how much the capital has changed - and not for the better. Mr. Ó Ríordáin said: 'The news of the incident on the streets of Dublin in the early hours of this morning is absolutely heartbreaking. First and foremost, my thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones. But we cannot ignore what this means for our city. People no longer feel safe in Dublin. Workers, visitors, and residents deserve better. 'Before the election, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil made a big show of the publication of the Dublin City Taskforce report. They claimed to have a plan to tackle crime, dereliction, and anti-social behaviour. But where is the implementation report? Where is the follow-through? Promises mean nothing if they don’t translate into action. 'We know the scale of vacancy and dereliction in Dublin city centre. Labour has consistently called for a serious, long-term plan to bring these spaces back into use, creating a city that feels safe, welcoming, and vibrant. But instead, Dublin is being left behind because of the political vacuum at the heart of decision-making. 'Cities compete for investment, talent, visitors, and attractions - but what vision do Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have for Dublin? None. Their failure to act means businesses are struggling and communities feel abandoned. 'We need real action now. That means more visible policing to restore public confidence. It means tackling vacancy and dereliction to create a city people want to live in and visit. It means leadership, not more empty promises. 'The Government must stop dragging its feet and implement the Dublin City Taskforce recommendations now. How many more tragic incidents will it take before they act?' Gardai say they are investigating 'all of the circumstances' surrounding the death and have launched a murder investigation. In a new statement, a Garda spokesperson said: 'Gardaí in Pearse Street are investigating all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his 30s following an incident in South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper, Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, February 15, 2025. 'Shortly after 3:00am, gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper where a man was found with serious injuries and unresponsive. He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and transferred to hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. 'A second male, also in his 30s, was injured in the vicinity and has been treated for non-life threatening injuries. 'The scene is currently preserved and a technical examination of the scene is taking place. The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified. A murder investigation has begun and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed. 'Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Any person who may have been present in the vicinity of South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper, Dublin 2 between 2:45am and 3:30am this morning
