JUST IN: With 9,228 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases, Massachusetts' confirmed total has risen above 1 million.
Sixty-three newly reported deaths brought the state's death toll from confirmed COVID-19 cases to 19,692, with another 446 dead from probable cases.Many who test positive using at-home testing kits may not be reporting their cases to the state.
The number of patients in Massachusetts hospitals with confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 1,707, the most since Jan. 29. The figure was once nearly 4,000, but reached under an average of 85 at one point in July. Hundreds of Massachusetts National Guard soldiers will begin training this week to help ease the burden of hospitals grappling with staffing shortages amid a spike in COVID-19 cases.
