Stargazers in parts of Ireland could be treated to a spectacular display of the Aurora Borealis on Thursday like the one last May, according to the latest predictions
Stargazers in parts of Ireland could witness a “massive” display of the Northern Lights tomorrow as a result of a solar flare detected yesterday that’s making its way towards Earth. People as far south as Cork caught a glimpse of the celestial light show back in May during a rare display, which was captured by many amateur photographers and shared widely on social media.
Experts believe that a similarly spectacular display is possible tomorrow night due to G2 geomagnetic storm conditions, which could even escalate to G3 or G4, causing a massive aurora. The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis occurs when energised particles from the sun hit Earth’s atmosphere and are redirected towards the planet’s poles. This creates a green and purple light show that fascinates stargazers and scientists. Crucially, a clear night is currently expected for most of the country tomorrow night, according to Met Éireann. However, cloud will build in the west towards morning. The Donegal Weather Channel website shared some “big Aurora news” as word of the solar flare emerged. “A full halo CME wasn’t observed, which means a direct hit the Earth will be likely,” it said. “This is likely to arrive later Thursday with G2 storm conditions likely and could spark stronger G3 or G4 storm conditions with a massive aurora.” Geomagnetic storm conditions could even last into the weekend, the site added. Areas along the west and north coast of Ireland are typically the best spots for viewing the Northern Lights, but May’s display was visible from all parts of the island.
