A fire is burning out of control at a former elementary school in SeaTac.
The fire at what used to be Maywood Elementary School on South 200th Street near 13th Avenue South was reported at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The school has been closed for years.
Firefighters were fighting part of the fire from the inside, but because of safety concerns, crews got out of the building and continued fighting the fire from the outside. The building was built in 1958. Fire officials said there is foam insulation in the ceiling that is melting and starting more fires.
“We have three ladder trucks set up. Two of them are flowing water. We also have a number of handlines flowing water. And we’re fighting it from the defensive or from the outside,” said Pat Pawlak, division chief of Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.Firefighters are asking people to stay out of the area.
