AUGUSTA, Ga. — Bryson DeChambeau is the early leader at this year’s Masters, firing a first-round 65 on Thursday as part of the delayed morning wave. As he walked off the 18th green he was three shots ahead of the rest of the field, though Scottie Scheffler birdied four of his last seven holes to shoot at 66. Advertisement Tee times were pushed back 2 1/2 hours at Augusta National after heavy rain fell overnight and into the morning, though conditions were not as severe as feared.
It took him 27 putts to get around Augusta National. Scottie Scheffler feels inevitable Scheffler, the 2022 Masters Champion, shot a 6-under 66 that puts him one shot behind DeChambeau on the leaderboard, but it’s hard to find someone around Augusta National believing in DeChambeau over Scheffler. Such is the state of the Texan’s game — we watched him win the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship, and finish second at the Houston Open, in his last three starts.
