The one-on-one connection to learning is kids’ best bet for catching up academically after two pandemic-disrupted years.
it’s been shown to be the best way for students to make rapid advances in achievement
Why do you need to intervene, Santa? Because you always deliver, while California, for all adults’ good intentions, struggles to manage programs that serve kids. Despite increases in school funding, this state fails to provide high-quality teachers and sufficient counseling and classes. Despite massive expansion of health programs, California children aren’t that healthy.
A new $8 billion grant this year is more promising because it’s restricted to intensive tutoring, literacy intervention, counseling and additional learning time. But it’s still not clear how much tutoring it will produce. One reason is that our volatile state budget, in surplus last year, now faces projected shortfalls with recession looming.
There is no shortage of ideas about expanding tutoring, inside and outside of government, for California to draw upon. The founder of Khan Academy is trying to create an online tutoring marketplace. An MIT professor is pitching a wayfor tutoring aimed at academic recovery. And at the federal level, there are proposals in Congress to expand AmeriCorps’ national community service network to make tutoring a priority.
