Unused concept art for TheMatrixResurrections reveals just how Neo and Trinity were revived in director Lana Wachowski's long-awaited sequel.
Concept art shared on social media reveals how Neo and Trinity were brought back to life in The Matrix Resurrections. Lana Wachowski's long-awaited fourth installment in the Matrix franchise was released in theaters and on HBO Max in December of last year. Resurrections reunited Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss as Neo and Trinity, respectively, picking up inside a simulation run by Neo himself. When the movie begins, though, he is a video game designer named Thomas Anderson.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In 2003's The Matrix Revolutions, both Trinity and Neo die during the film's climactic battle in Zion. Therefore, one of the biggest questions going into Resurrections was how both of them could be alive and well. In the latest sequel, it is revealed that The Analyst managed to repair both Neo and Trinity's bodies by creating a new version of the Matrix where he could manipulate humans.
The Matrix Resurrections featured its share of visually dazzling sequences. Some of these sequences recalled the first film in the franchise, which changed the course of science-fiction cinema forever. However, none of The Matrix Resurrections' new scenes matched the look of what the concept art shows. It is interesting to see that, from this concept art, a resurrection scene was in fact envisioned that revealed exactly how Neo and Trinity survived the events of The Matrix Revolutions.
One can see why the Matrix Resurrections scene was scrapped, as it removes the ambiguity that makes the film's first two acts interesting. No one knows how Neo is alive, and the mystery gets slowly peeled back once he meets a new version of Morpheus, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. When the mystery is cleared up, Neo goes on a mission to save Trinity from The Analyst's simulation.
