Matt Doherty has been praised by Wolves technical director Matt Jackson for his dedication and leadership during his 13-year stint with the club. He will leave at the end of the season as the club's 16th highest appearance maker and a 'club man' in a rarity in modern football.

Matt Doherty has been hailed as a Wolves man “through and through” after it was confirmed that he would leave the relegated club this summer.international will leave at the end of his current contract this summer, and he will do so having written his name intoHe will leave as the club’s 16th highest appearance maker and, despite his spells at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, a “ club man” - a rarity in the modern game.

An article on the club website announcing his imminent departure highlighted his popularity within the dressing room, his “dry humour, wit and laid-back nature. ” Doherty moved to Wolves in 2010 after he lined out for League of Ireland side Bohemians in a friendly against the then-Premier League side, and caught the eye of manager Mick McCarthy.

Wolves were in the top-flight for seven of Doherty’s 13 years there, including this season when he made 11 top-flight appearances as Rob Edwards’ side finished bottom of the table. He was a League One and a Championship winner, while he was the club’s Player of the Year in 2015/16.

Wolves technical director, Matt Jackson, paid tribute to Doherty, saying: “It’s rare to get actual ‘club men’ in the modern game, but Doc is definitely a Wolverhampton Wanderers man, through and through.

“He’s been absolutely exceptional throughout the 13 years he’s spent at the club, both on the pitch and with the leadership he displays off it. “Growing from an inexperienced teenager when he first arrived to now being the most senior and experienced member of the playing squad.

“He’s a great role model for young players on how to build a career, playing at the very highest level, along with his international football, and has deserved everything that the game has given to him. “Doc has always been a really good member of the squad, a voice that I can go to, an experienced head in the changing room dynamic, and someone who has been very understanding of the situation we’ve been in and the pressures that everybody has been under.

“He’s been a pleasure to work alongside during my time at the club, and I wish him nothing but the very best for the future, as he will have many more years in the game in whatever capacity he chooses to have. ” Doherty made over 300 appearances for Wolves and scored 28 goals before he moved to Tottenham in the summer of 2020.

After he returned three years later, he made another 87 appearances in all competitions, most recently at centre-back.
