. On the day of his death, he had taken his first ketamine injection at 8.30am and then watched a film. The weirdness of that predicament, the unaccountable wealth, the pressures of fame and his descent into an opioid and prescription-drugs nightmare are all laid out in raw, unfiltered detail in his book. The reality is about as far from the cosy security of the Friends apartment as is imaginable. And it was during his promotional interviews that the power of Perry’s voice and tone hinted at a much broader range and potential than the wild success of Friends had permitted him.
The US National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics has reams of figures that bear witness to this. Almost 10 million Americans aged 12 and over misuse opioids at least once in a year. Of those, 2.7 million have an opioid disorder. Perry was one of 107,543 Americans who died from a drug overdose in 2023.
