The TGL — a new golf league from Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports venture — has added two more players to its league: ◻️ Max Homa, world golf rank No. 13 ◻️ Billy Horschel, 7x PGA Tour winner TGL will begin play in January 2024.
’s first tournament — will feature six teams of three PGA Tour players in a custom-built “tech-infused” venue. The two-hour competitions will take place Monday nights and the schedule will complement the PGA Tour’s. There will be 15 regular-season matches followed by semifinals and finals. We’re still a year out from the TGL actually putting on its first show, but adding another top-10 golfer who is in the prime of his career feels like a good addition.
But why these announcements are newsworthy relate back to the dominant storyline in men’s golf over the last year. If you’re signing up for TGL, you’re aligning yourself with Woods and McIlroy. And not just showing up at a meeting in Delaware and going along with the crowd, but putting some pen to paper. And signing up with Woods and McIlroy means a long-term commitment to the PGA Tour, one that is not easily undone by LIV’s riches.
If this all feels very Sharks vs. Jets to you, we apologize. But that’s just how things are right now. — Woods and McIlroy, along with CEO Mike McCarley, announced the new company “focused on building technology-focused ventures that feature progressive approaches to sports, media and entertainment” last year.
Television executive Dick Ebersol was an initial investor. In November, the company announced a star-studded group of new investors spanning 26 active and retired athletes, including star Steph Curry, baseball’s Shohei Ohtani, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, Bills quarterback Josh Allen and tennis greats Serena Williams and Andy Murray.
