Verstappen overcame a 10th-place starting position to win Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix while Ferrari bungled away a potential double podium with a poor strategy yet again.
Leclerc was leading the race and seemingly in a great position to take a momentum-grabbing victory before the series takes a month off – but Ferrari chose to put hard tires on his car in reaction to a Verstappen pit stop. Those hard tires hadn’t worked all day for any other team who tried them, and they didn’t work for Leclerc, either; he eventually had to pit again for soft tires and finished sixth.
“Amazing result,” Verstappen told his team on the radio. “Who would have thought when we woke up that we’d win the race?”
