Hennelly amassed over 70 appearances for the county in league and championship.

Mayo stalwart Rob Hennelly has announced his inter-county retirement this evening following a 13-year career with the county.Twice nominated for an All-Star, he racked up 43 league and 32 Championship appearances and played in three All-Ireland finals.

Breaffy native Hennelly will be remembered for his free-taking abilities, scoring a 0-38 tally in his time with Mayo. Most memorably, he scored a long-range free against Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-finals to force extra-time and ultimately end their unbeaten streak. In a statement released through Mayo GAA, he said, "I am privileged to have been involved with the Mayo senior team since 2009 and to have played at the highest level for as long as I have.

"I tried to give it a go again this year, but life moves fast as they say – and I'm grateful to be leaving on my own terms and with so much to look forward to in 2025 and beyond." Mayo manager Kevin McStay added: "Rob Hennelly has given outstanding service to Mayo football. He developed his game right throughout his career and, as manager for the last two seasons, I saw up close how much he dedicated himself to improving his craft."

He played his final game for Mayo in February of this year when they faced Tyrone in Omagh. He joins Cillian O'Connor as a high profile absence for 2025.
