Mick McCarthy also made an admission when it came to his capping of non-Irish-born players.

Mick McCarthy has reopened the Declan Rice and Jack Grealish debate by claiming that the pair should have been capped competitively before they were given an opportunity to play for England.

“I just inherited that one at the very last knockings of Declan. I went to meet him and he’s such a lovely guy,” McCarthy told the ‘Quickly Kevin, Will He Score’ podcast, co-hosted by comedian Josh Widdicombe. “And of course we never picked Jack or Declan to play in one of them, which is sad. We’d be a much better team if those two were with us.”

Last November he told TalkSPORT: “You can't coerce players into becoming international players. I played Declan Rice three times in three friendly games. “He's born in England. It's really as simple as this, you cannot coerce people, you cannot just bring them into an international game, I'm talking about a competitive game where the minute that he plays in a competitive match for the country that's them announcing that they're going to play for them.
