Matthew McConaughey thinks some viewers are going to mistake his SuperBowl ad for an Interstellar sequel trailer. 'I wanted it to... look very serious and in space... Some people are going to think this is going to the trailer for ‘Interstellar 2’.'
Matthew McConaughey says he wanted fans to believe his Super Bowl ad was a trailer for Interstellar 2. The 52-year-old actor featured in the acclaimed sci-fi film from Christopher Nolan in 2014. McConaughey starred as astronaut Joseph Cooper, who leads a team on a journey through space and time in the hopes of saving humanity.
While McConaughey has starred in a number of critically acclaimed titles Interstellar marks one of his most illustrious projects, garnering an Academy Award for its visual effects and securing four other nominations. The film focuses on a desolate future Earth where food shortages and inhospitable conditions have caused humanity to search for a new planet to call home.
"I wanted it to open and look very serious and in space because we’re about to pull the rug out from under you. Some people are going to think this is going to the trailer for ‘Interstellar 2’."Though the advert certainly cashes in on the popularity of McConaughey and Interstellar, it quickly switches to convey an altogether different message.
While a sequel to Interstellar seems improbable, fans are likely to be delighted by the callback to the now iconic sci-fi picture. Utilizing McConaughey’s famous knack for monologues, viewers should be suitably engaged with the ad’s green message and its promotion of Earth-sustaining values, despite its blatant teasing. Bouncing off a film which attempted to use science to create plausibility in its story, Interstellar fans will still undoubtedly find appreciation for the somewhat ironic advert.
