Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry both achieved the remarkable feat of scoring holes-in-one during their opening rounds at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. McIlroy's tee shot on the par-three 15th hole at Spyglass Hill sailed directly into the cup, while Lowry registered his ace on the par-three seventh hole at Pebble Beach. This marked McIlroy's second career hole-in-one, following his previous one at the 2023 Travelers Championship, on the eighth hole at TPC River Highlands.
McIlroy acknowledged the fortunate nature of his shot, stating, 'Honestly, it was lucky. I don't see many balls these days go straight in the hole and stay in the hole. Pretty fortunate because it could have come out and gone back in the water or do anything. It was a good swing, good wedge shot.' Lowry, who has previously aced the 16th hole at Augusta National during the Masters and the renowned 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass, added another impressive achievement to his golfing resume. Both golfers finished their opening rounds with a score of six-under 66, placing them in a tie for eighth position. They trail the leader, Russell Henley, by two shots, who sits at eight-under. McIlroy, commencing his round on the 10th hole, surged to three-under after his hole-in-one and concluded strongly with birdies on the 6th, 7th, and 9th holes. Lowry, conversely, reached the turn at four-under 32 before adding another birdie on the par-four 3rd. He encountered setbacks with a bogey on the 5th and a penalty shot on the 6th, followed by his spectacular ace on the 7th. Seamus Power from Waterford, Ireland, carded a three-under 69 in his opening round, sharing 37th place. World number one Scottie Scheffler, competing in his first tournament since a hand injury sustained during a Christmas dinner mishap last month, finished the day at five-under 67, trailing the leader by three shots. Scheffler, despite a starting bogey on the first hole at Spyglass Hill, quickly found his rhythm with two birdies before the turn and four more on the back nine.Meanwhile, Leona Maguire made a strong start to the Tournament of Champions in Orlando, securing a tie for fourth place after the opening round. Her two-under 70 leaves her five shots behind the leader, South Korea's Kim A-Lim
