Meath GAA has made a bold move by appointing 21-year-old Eoghan Frayne as their new football captain. This decision reflects manager Robbie Brennan's commitment to building a team around younger talent, despite recalling experienced players. Frayne, a proven scorer, will be supported by vice-captain Ciaran Caulfield, another rising star.
Eoghan Frayne has been appointed Meath football skipper at just 21 years of age. New Royals’ manager Robbie Brennan may have recalled some older hands, but he has also signalled his intent to place his faith in youth. Brennan’s vice captain will be Trim’s Ciaran Caulfield , who is currently skippering and starring for DCU in the Sigerson Cup. The versatile Caulfield, who can operate at wing back and wing forward is also 21.
\Frayne has captained Meath underage sides in the past and was selected on the Higher Education Rising Stars team last year. He is again fronting Maynooth’s Sigerson Cup challenge. The dead ball specialist hit 1-5 in Meath’s Leinster Championship victory over Longford last year and was the county’s top scorer in the All-Ireland series, hitting 0-11, with five of those coming from play. Frayne was also a central figure as Summerhill landed the 2023 Meath Championship, hitting six points in the final, including three from play, when he was just 20. It is unusual for managers to opt for such a youthful skipper. One example of it was Jim McGuinness' decision to appoint Michael Murphy as Donegal captain in the manager's first season (2011), although it was Murphy's fifth at senior level. Caulfield and Frayne are players Brennan will hope to build a team around, while it will be fascinating to see what role the experienced players he has recalled will play. They include Padraic Harnan and Bryan Menton, who both played down the spine of the team under Andy McEntee. Meath open their Division 2 National League campaign in Cork at the weekend
