The cover flaps had mistakenly not been closed, meaning the mechanic could be pulled into the running engine which then caught fire

A mechanic was sucked into a running jet engine of a Boeing aircraft and killed during routine maintenance work last Wednesday.

According to German newspaper Bild, the engine on the right-hand side of the aircraft had been started for a test run with the cover flaps open and a safety area had been set up around the engine in line with standard safety procedures. The mechanic's remains were recovered from the scene after the airport’s emergency services and fire brigade arrived and extinguished the alight engine with water, reported the outlet. In May, a similar incident happened when a man was killed after being pulled into the engine of a KLM passenger plane at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

It was reported at the time that the victim was involved in ground operations for the aircraft that had been parked at the gate of the airport
