If a student is found to have violated the honor code, the BYU website states, “There are not set consequences for specific behaviors because context matters. Prior violations, the motivation, intent and openness of the student, as well as the impact and relative severity of the behavior must be considered when determining the appropriate path forward for each student.”
Orr says she found it hard to be authentic and empowered at BYU, and she wanted for her graduation display to reflect what she, as well as other LGBTQ+ students, went through at the school. “I wanted to honor what I had gone through in the experience and that things needed to change. I was going to protest in a civil manner. My purpose doing it was for those who were there with me, and for the faculty, to know that I got out and that others who are experiencing this, that they can get out too.
Telling only her sisters of her plan, Orr recalled what happened the moment she accepted her diploma. “It was actually a really small thing,” she said. “They read my name and the camera looked at me and I opened my robe and smiled, and then I closed it.” She noted that amid the rush of reading off graduate names, there wasn't a huge reaction. It was only later as she left the ceremony, that the true impact was apparent.
Orr is now eager to pursue her post-grad endeavors and she's hopeful that changes could one day come to the campus of BYU. “I believe in change. I need to constantly improve, but I also believe that those I work with can constantly improve. And I also expect BYU to constantly improve," she said. “I can hold space for BYU to do better and to be better and to change. And I, I don't have to hold against the past. I don't have to hold the past of BYU against them.
