PR expert advises Meghan to let Prince Harry focus on his initiative while praising her Instagram strategy.
Meghan Markle has been cautioned by a PR expert regarding her participation in the Invictus Games . The Duchess of Sussex, along with her husband and the tournament's founder Prince Harry , spent five days at the 2025 Games in Canada. The couple were seen sharing affectionate moments during the opening ceremony.
Meghan has also been actively documenting her time at the event on her newly-launched Instagram account, posting stories of her interactions with competitors' children and her exhilarating experience tubing on Whistler's snow-covered ski runs. However, it has been revealed that despite several more days of competition remaining, Meghan is returning home to California and her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Her travel plans were kept confidential for security reasons, but it was always intended for her to leave the event early. Prince Harry is expected to remain at the Games until after the closing ceremony this Sunday. This comes after a challenging period for the Sussexes, who faced criticism as 'disaster tourists' following their visit to victims of California wildfires and were the subject of a harsh Vanity Fair article about their working conditions. According to Edward Coram James, a PR expert and CEO of Go Up, Meghan would have been better off not attending the Invictus Games, citing that it's Harry's project and he's capable of generating support and publicity on his own. James told the Mirror: 'Meghan should leave the Invictus Games to Harry. It's his project, and he's more than capable of drumming up support and publicity for this incredible cause. Their joint brand has become tainted over the years - not through any fault of their own, but due to woeful PR.' James also stated that Meghan's presence was always going to be a difficult situation, but from a PR perspective, she handled it well by being engaged but not overbearing. However, he believes she needs to recognise that her critics will always say she's making things about herself. On a positive note, James thinks Meghan has utilised her new Instagram account effectively during the Games, allowing her to reclaim her autonomy. He added: 'Meghan is a woman blessed with many things - fame, influence, a platform - but for a long time, autonomy wasn't one of them. 'It looks like she's out to reclaim that autonomy, one Instagram Story at a time. Even her handle says a lot. Literally just 'Meghan' - clean, simple, powerful. No 'MeghanDuchessOfSussex'. No fluff. How she managed to snag that coveted handle, who knows, but it's a statement in itself. 'Also, the choice to post Instagram Stories seems very strategic because stories obviously disappear in 24 hours, making them feel real and spontaneous. This makes her seem more relatable, less 'polished Royal exile,' and more in tune with her modern audience.' The Invictus Games will continue until Sunday, culminating in a grand closing ceremony featuring performances by Jelly Roll and the Barenaked Ladies. Harry is set to stay in Canada for the duration of the Games, where he is anticipated to deliver a speech at the closing event. Harry, who served as a captain in the British Army, initiated the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sports competition for injured service personnel and veterans.
