Grieder: Melissa Lucio is scheduled for execution next month. She may be innocent.
It’s not every day Texas leaders speak up on behalf of a convicted murderer — much less one like Melissa Lucio, who in 2008 was sentenced to death for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, Mariah.“The system literally failed Melissa Lucio at every single turn,” state Rep. Jeff Leach, a Republican from Plano who serves as chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence, said at a news conference last week at the Texas Capitol calling for clemency.
Sadly, good faith doesn’t always drive or constrain the state of Texas. But comments such as Leach’s should give statewide GOP leaders pause, for more than one reason. Mariah, Lucio’s 12th and youngest child, was just 2 years old when she died in February 2007 from blunt force trauma. Police swiftly suspected Lucio because she was often alone with her children at home. After hours of interrogation, Lucio took responsibility for spanking and biting the little girl on occasion and, eventually, for causing her death. “I guess I did it,” she said. Largely on the basis of this confession, she was sentenced in 2008 to death..
Lucio had, Thompson continued, denied causing her daughter’s death 80 times over the course of the hours-long interrogation before finally giving up and agreeing with the investigators’ version of events.
