Eastbound traffic on Memorial Drive got a new experience Monday.
“Green wins over gray, and green is winning over the highway” said Shellye Arnold, president and CEO of the Memorial Park Conservancy, referring to Memorial Drive. Once the overhead land bridges open, parkgoers will be able to walk over on paved paths or grassy areas instead of hitting the pavement. Soon landscapers will seed the land bridge with a spring/summer cover crop that will take root and leave behind nutrients that will help the prairie to succeed after it’s planted in the fall. It can take five to seven years for prairie land to fully establish.
The land bridge’s concrete tunnels — that were delivered in six-foot pieces, assembled and then covered with 500,000 cubic yards of dirt — are 25 feet tall and 54 feet wide, allowing for three lanes of traffic in each. The pair of eastbound tunnels are now open and sometime in May the westbound tunnels and roads will open to traffic.
“I’ve heard it said, now and then, that you have these 100-year moments when you have the right people and the stars align,” said Sarah Newbery, director of parks and green space at the Kinder Institute, of efforts since Houston’s City Council first approved the plan back in 2018.Kinder Foundation senior vice president of parks and civic projects Guy Hagstette makes some remarks at the inauguration of the Memorial Drive eastbound land bridge, Monday, March 28, 2022, in Houston.
