Few football managers could ever hope to leave such an indomitable legacy of triumph and excellence as Sir Walter Smith did during his two spells at Rangers FC.
But the all-time-great, who sadly died on this day in 2021 aged 73, will be remembered for much more than that., six league cups and five Scottish Cups. He took the Gers within a whisker of lifting the UEFA Cup and was still winning trophies as the club entered its darkest hours in the early 2010s.
Smith succeeded Graeme Souness as Rangers boss in 1991 having served as the assistant at Ibrox for five years. It would turn out to be a glittering era for the Rangers trophy room, with the club lifting the league title in all but one season over the course of the decade.
