The damning revelation was contained in the Sexual Violence Survey 2022 which was released by the Central Statistics Office yesterday.

This compared with just 2% of adults who agreed. It comes as almost a third of men were uncertain with the statement “women often make up or exaggerate reports of rape" compared with a quarter of women. “More than eight in ten young adults thought that sexual violence against women was common, compared with seven in ten of those aged 35-44.
Reacting to the report, DRCC’s CEO Noeline Blackwell said the findings resonated well with DRCC’s own research on attitudes to sexual violence and consent from 2021. Ms Blackwell continued: “Today’s figures indicate considerable progress in our societal understanding of the prevalence of sexual violence.
“This is consistent with reactions to our work in Dublin Rape Crisis Centre where, despite all the painstaking, difficult, and long-drawn-out investigation that accompanies investigation of rape and other sexual violence, those we support must often struggle with long-held societal myths and attitudes that those who report rape – mainly women - are not to be trusted.”
