Some officers have told i armed police who turn in their firearms should face misconduct proceeddings, while others have called for greater clarity over legal powers
The issue has split officers, with Sir Mark voicing “concern among firearms officers… that they will face years of protracted legal proceedings which impact on their personal wellbeing” and calling for legal changes to give them “sufficient legal protection to enable them to do their job and keep the public safe”.armed police who turn in their firearms permits should face misconduct hearings and permanently lose their licences.
“Quite frankly, I feel embarrassed to be a member of the organisation where I feel colleagues who are professionals are acting out like this.He added that if it was officers who truly wanted to step back and reflect he would understand because of the intensity of the responsibility, which he personally understood having been trained in firearms.
The Met declined to comment on whether or not the officers who had returned to armed duties had undergone additional assessment.
