Met Office extends Lancashire thunderstorm warning to 38 hours with flooding, lightning and hail on the way

A thunderstorm warning issued by the Met Office covering the whole of Lancashire and Cumbria has now been extended into Tuesday and will last 38 hours.

Forecasters say flash flooding, lightning, hail and strong winds could hit the region after more extreme heat this weekend with temperatures in Lancashire passing 30C. The rain will be welcome for farmers and those with gardens but the Met Office has warned that the sudden change in weather could lead to flooding and possible disruption.

What to expect Earlier this week United Utilities said that while rainfall in Cumbria, which has two reservoirs that serve the North West, has been normal the company is 'closely monitoring' levels in Lancashire. Haweswater in the Lake District holds more than 84 billion litres of water - the equivalent to around 33,800 Olympic swimming pools.

Tonight: The odd shower is possible over the high ground, but for most it will be a dry and sunny evening. Skies remain clear overnight, with temperatures only slowly falling away. Minimum temperature 16 °C.
