A variety of countries work together to help name the storms that will disrupt the British weather
It has become a common occurrence in recent years for storms approaching the UK to have unique names.
The key reason for naming storms such as Babet which will batter the UK throughout the start of the weekend is to help raise awareness about storms. According to the Met Office, it aids in providing consistent messages and communication through media channels and government agencies. "So when we get those storms on the horizon, we give them a name and the word gets spread wider on normal media and on social media as well. So it's all about getting the awareness around, making people aware."
A new list is released each year which runs from early September to late August the following year. We've broken down all the names set up for 2023/24.
